Alberta Mentor Foundation for Youth (AMFY) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping junior and senior high school students achieve their full potential through supportive in-school mentoring relationships.

The AMFY Mentor

2007 Mentor Satisfaction Survey Results are in. Click here to view the summary.

An AMFY Mentor is:

  • An advisor and friend who helps motivate and encourage students to set personal and academic goals, maximize their potential, consider future career paths, and stay in school.
  • From a broad range of backgrounds and may be a business person, a professional, a tradesperson, a post-secondary student, a senior, or a retired individual.
  • Someone with a sincere desire to work with young people.
Making the Connection

AMFY recruits, screens, and trains adult volunteers to mentor junior and senior high school students. The entire screening and training process is performed at no cost to the volunteer. School staff identify students who could benefit from the program using AMFY criteria. If a student is interested in participating, parental permission is obtained and the student and mentor begin meeting for one hour a week at the school for the duration of the school year.

Safe and Secure

The safety of all students involved in the program is paramount, so all AMFY mentors are thoroughly screened and trained prior to being matched with a student.

This includes:

  • A written application with three reference checks – one personal, one professional.
  • A personal interview with AMFY staff.
  • A Police Check and an Intervention Record Check.
  • A written psychological assessment (MMPI-2) which is administered and assessed by a chartered psychologist.
  • A full-day comprehensive training workshop.
